            Baum muß atmen. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1663" xml:space="preserve">Er nimmt Kohlenſäure aus der Luft auf,

            und haucht dafür Sauerſtoff aus. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1664" xml:space="preserve">Dies aber kann er nicht,
              <lb/>
            wenn er nicht in jedem Augenblick mit außerordentlich viel
              <lb/>
            Luft in Berührung ſteht, wenn er ſich nicht in eine ungeheure
              <lb/>
            Oberſläche teilt, und deshalb ſtirbt auch ein Baum ab, wenn
              <lb/>
            man ihn der Blätter in der Zeit des Sommers beraubt.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1666" xml:space="preserve">Was aber macht der Baum mit dem, was er einatmet?

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1667" xml:space="preserve">Dieſe Luftart, die Kohlenſäure, geht in die Säfte über, welche
              <lb/>
            ſich in den Zellen des Baumes befinden; </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1668" xml:space="preserve">dieſe Luftart iſt ein
              <lb/>
            Teil ſeiner Nahrung; </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1669" xml:space="preserve">den Kohlenſtoff behält der Baum zurück
              <lb/>
            und bildet dadurch die kohlenreiche Holzzelle, die uns ſo treff-
              <lb/>
            liche Dienſte leiſtet, während er den Sauerſtoff zurückgiebt und
              <lb/>
            wieder aushaucht.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1671" xml:space="preserve">Der Bau und das Atmen eines Baumes hat alſo offen-
              <lb/>
            bar große Ähnlichkeit mit dem Bau und dem Atmen einer
              <lb/>
            Lunge. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1672" xml:space="preserve">Aber es iſt dies eine Ähnlichkeit zweier Dinge, die auf
              <lb/>
            ihr Gegenteil in Einrichtung und Ziel hinausläuft.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1674" xml:space="preserve">Ein Baum iſt eine ungeheuere Verteilung einer einſtäm-
              <lb/>
            migen Maſſe; </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1675" xml:space="preserve">in der Lunge findet ſich die ungeheure Ver-
              <lb/>
            teilung und Verzweigung eines leeren Raumes. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1676" xml:space="preserve">Ein Baum
              <lb/>
            ſtreckt ſeine ſaftreichen, blutreichen Äſte in die Luft hinein,
              <lb/>
            die ihn umgiebt; </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1677" xml:space="preserve">in der Lunge iſt das Gegenteil der Fall:
              <lb/>
            </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1678" xml:space="preserve">es erſtrecken ſich luftige Äſte hinein in eine blutreiche Umge-
              <lb/>
            bung. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1679" xml:space="preserve">Der Baum iſt ein Gebilde, wo die Luft von außen und
              <lb/>
            der Lebensſaft innen iſt; </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1680" xml:space="preserve">in dem Luftbaum der Lunge iſt die
              <lb/>
            Luft innerhalb des Baumgezweiges, und der Lebensſaft, das
              <lb/>
            Blut, befindet ſich außerhalb in der Umgebung desſelben. </s>

              <lb/>
            wie ſich ſchon hierin bei aller Gleichheit des Baues ein Gegen-
              <lb/>
            teil der Einrichtung zeigt, ſo iſt dies auch in dem Stoff der
              <lb/>
            Fall, der in beiden Fällen ein- und ausgeatmet wird. </s>
