            <emph style="bf">V. Die Speiſung der Pflanze durch die Wurzel.</emph>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1387" xml:space="preserve">Das Eindringen der mineraliſchen und ſtickſtoffhaltigen
              <lb/>
            Pflanzennahrung in die Pflanze geſchieht, wie bereits erwähnt,
              <lb/>
            hauptſächlich durch die Wurzel, und zwar findet ſowohl Waſſer,
              <lb/>
            wie die Stickſtoffnahrung und die Salze, durch die in der Erde
              <lb/>
            liegende Wurzel den Weg zum Innern der Pflanze.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1389" xml:space="preserve">Man macht ſich im gewöhnlichen Leben die Vorſtellung,
              <lb/>
            daß eine Wurzel das Waſſer ſo auſſauge, wie etwa ein Stück
              <lb/>
            Löſchpapier, das man mit einem Ende in Waſſer taucht, wo
              <lb/>
            man ſofort bemerkt, daß das Waſſer ſich weiter in das Papier
              <lb/>
            hineinzieht. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1390" xml:space="preserve">Man denkt ſich gemeinhin, daß das Waſſer von
              <lb/>
            der Wurzel aus in die Pflanze hineinſteigt, ebenſo, wie wenn
              <lb/>
            man ein Stück weißen Zucker mit einer Ecke in den Kaffee
              <lb/>
            taucht und ſofort wahrnimmt, daß die Flüſſigkeit in den Zucker
              <lb/>
            hinaufläuft.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1392" xml:space="preserve">Dieſe Vorſtellung iſt ganz falſch. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1393" xml:space="preserve">Es iſt zwar nicht lange
              <lb/>
            her, daß ſelbſt die Gelehrten ſolche Vorſtellung von der Ver-
              <lb/>
            breitung der Flüſſigkeiten in den Pflanzen hatten; </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1394" xml:space="preserve">die neuere
              <lb/>
            Wiſſenſchaft indeſſen iſt durch genauere Unterſuchungen zu der
              <lb/>
            Überzeugung gekommen, daß die Verbreitung der Flüſſigkeiten
              <lb/>
            im Pflanzenkörper auf ganz anderem Wege vor ſich geht.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s1396" xml:space="preserve">Die Pflanzenkörper beſtehen ja (Fig. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1397" xml:space="preserve">3) aus dicht aneinander
              <lb/>
            gedrängten, ganz kleinen Zellen, die im lebenden Zuſtande mit
              <lb/>
            Flüſſigkeit erfüllt ſind. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s1398" xml:space="preserve">Die Wände der Zellen beſitzen die
              <lb/>
            Eigenſchaft, die Flüſſigkeit durch eine Art Ausſchwitzung von
              <lb/>
            ſich zu geben und dafür durch Einſchwitzung eine Flüſſigkeit
              <lb/>
            aufzunehmen; </s>
