            Stand der Dinge, die Welle iſt weiter gerückt, hat ſich “um

            eine Phaſe verſchoben”, wie man zu ſagen pflegt. </s>

            einen Augenblick ſpäter iſt die Welle ein Endchen weiter
              <lb/>
            gerückt, ſie hat die Form, welche uns die punktierte Linie zeigt:

            tiefſten Punkt der Welle erreicht.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s103" xml:space="preserve">Nun muß man ſich nur denken, daß dieſe Fortbewegung
              <lb/>
            ſehr raſch vor ſich geht, viel, viel ſchneller, als es ſich be-
              <lb/>
            ſchreiben läßt, und man hat einen Begriff, wie eine Wellen-
              <lb/>
            bewegung zuſtande kommt, ohne daß die Teilchen ſich in ihrer
              <lb/>
            Lage zu einander verſchieben, ohne daß irgend eine ſeitliche
              <lb/>
            Bewegung eintritt, wie es dem Auge erſcheint.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s105" xml:space="preserve">Kehren wir nun zu den Waſſerwellen zurück! Übertragen
              <lb/>
            wir auf dieſe alle jene Erſcheinungen, welche wir an den Seil-
              <lb/>
            wellen beobachtet haben und wir wiſſen, wie wir ſolche Wellen
              <lb/>
            aufzufaſſen haben.</s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s106" xml:space="preserve"> Dieſe ſind nichts, als eine Erſchütterung des Waſſerſpiegels, welche ſich in einem abwechſelnden Auf-
              <lb/>
            und Niederſchwanken der einzelnen Waſſerteilchen äußert. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s107" xml:space="preserve">Auch
              <lb/>
            die “Reflektion” der Wellen, welche wir an den Seilwellen
              <lb/>
            beobachteten, läßt ſich an den Waſſerwellen beobachten, natürlich
              <lb/>
            nur, wenn ſich in der Nähe eine glatte, feſte, möglichſt ſenkrechte
              <lb/>
            Wand befindet, von welcher die Wellen zurückprallen können.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s109" xml:space="preserve">Durch Vorgänge, welche den bisher beſchriebenen, täglich
              <lb/>
            zu beobachtenden in jeder Weiſe ähnlich ſind, glaubt man alle
              <lb/>
              <note symbol="*)" position="foot" xlink:label="note-016-01" xlink:href="note-016-01a" xml:space="preserve">Einem Irrtum muß hier noch entgegengetreten werden: Wer
                <lb/>
              einmal an der See war, wird bei der Bezeichnung Waſſerwellen ſtets an
                <lb/>
              die großen Wellen denken, welche unabläſſig ans Ufer rollen, und wird
                <lb/>
              darauf hinweiſen, daß hier doch nicht nur ein Auf- und Niederſchwingen
                <lb/>
              ſtattfindet, ſondern zweifellos eine ſeitliche Fortbewegung. Darauf aber
                <lb/>
              iſt zu erwidern, daß wir dieſe großen Meereswogen nicht in jeder Beziehung
                <lb/>
              den oben bezeichneten Wellen gleichſtellen dürfen, aus Gründen, deren nähere
                <lb/>
              Erörterung uns hier zu weit abſchweifen laſſen würde.</note>
