            <s xml:id="echoid-s4114" xml:space="preserve">Dieſe aufzufinden, iſt eine
              <lb/>
            Herausforderung, der ſich kein Denker und kein Rechner ent-
              <lb/>
            ziehen mag.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s4116" xml:space="preserve">Es giebt nun freilich einige Thatſachen, welche einen An-
              <lb/>
            halt zur Löſung des Rätſels darbieten. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s4117" xml:space="preserve">Wenn der Mond
              <lb/>
            ſeinen Umlauf beſchleunigt, ſo kann es daher rühren, daß die
              <lb/>
            Anziehungskraft der Erde ſich verſtärkt hat. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s4118" xml:space="preserve">Da dieſe An-
              <lb/>
            ziehungskraft von der Maſſe der Erde abhängt, ſo wäre dies
              <lb/>
            gleichbedeutend mit der Vorausſetzung, daß die Erde an Maſſe
              <lb/>
            zugenommen habe. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s4119" xml:space="preserve">Dergleichen iſt aber ſehr wohl denkbar,
              <lb/>
            ſeitdem man weiß, daß die Meteormaſſen, welche man auf-
              <lb/>
            findet, aus den Himmelsräumen herſtammen, wo ſie herum-
              <lb/>
            ſchwärmen, bis ſie in die Atmoſphäre der Erde geraten und,
              <lb/>
            gehemmt in ihrem Laufe, unter Donner und Flammen auf die
              <lb/>
            Erde niederſtürzen. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s4120" xml:space="preserve">Ein Wachſen der Erdmaſſe iſt demnach
              <lb/>
            nicht in Abrede zu ſtellen, und hiernach iſt eine verſtärkte An-
              <lb/>
            ziehungskraft und eine Beſchleunigung des Mondlaufes, als
              <lb/>
            Folge, nicht zu beſtreiten. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s4121" xml:space="preserve">Allein wenn man bedenkt, daß ſelbſt
              <lb/>
            die allermächtigſten Meteormaſſen, die man aufgefunden hat,
              <lb/>
            ganz und gar verſchwindend klein ſind gegen die Erdmaſſe,
              <lb/>
            daß ferner von einem regelmäßigen und fortdauernden Falle
              <lb/>
            ſolcher mächtigen Meteormaſſen gar nicht die Rede ſein kann,
              <lb/>
            während die Beſchleunigung des Mondlaufes regelmäßig wächſt
              <lb/>
            und auf einer dauernd fortwirkenden Urſache beruhen muß, ſo
              <lb/>
            könnte man dieſer Erklärung des Rätſels keinen wiſſenſchaft-
              <lb/>
            lichen Wert beimeſſen.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s4123" xml:space="preserve">Da trat denn
              <emph style="sp">Delaunay</emph>
            im Jahre 1865 mit einer Theorie
              <lb/>
            auf, durch welche das unlösbare Phänomen der Mondbeſchleu-
              <lb/>
            nigung auf ein ganz anderes Gebiet der Naturgeſetze hinüber-
              <lb/>
            getragen wurde. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s4124" xml:space="preserve">Nach dieſer ſcharſſinnig erdachten Theorie iſt
              <lb/>
            die Beſchleunigung des Mondlaufes nicht eine wirkliche That-
              <lb/>
            ſache, ſondern nur ein bloßer Schein, welchem eine </s>
