            durch dieſes Wort den Vorgang erklärt; </s>

              <lb/>
            geſtand gerne ein, daß dies Wort ſelber noch der Erklärung
              <lb/>
            bedurfte und ſie iſt ſchließlich durch die Erkenntnis gefunden
              <lb/>
            worden, daß das anſteckende Mittel aus winzigen Pflanzen
              <lb/>
            (Bakterien), die ſich ſchnell ins Ungeheuerliche vermehren, be-
              <lb/>
            ſteht. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s5026" xml:space="preserve">— Will man ſich nun beim Magnetismus mit einem
              <lb/>
              <emph style="sp">Wort</emph>
            begnügen, nun ſo mag man, wenn man will, ſagen, es
              <lb/>
            gehe im erſten Moment, wo der Magnet das Eiſen berührt,
              <lb/>
            ein Prozeß der Anſteckung vor, wodurch das Eiſen gleichfalls
              <lb/>
            magnetiſch wird. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s5027" xml:space="preserve">Durch Streichen wird die Anſteckung noch
              <lb/>
            vollſtändiger.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s5029" xml:space="preserve">Eine weitere Beobachtung zeigt uns indeſſen, daß wir
              <lb/>
            dem Geheimnis des Magnetismus noch etwas näher auf die
              <lb/>
            Spur zu kommen imſtande ſind.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s5031" xml:space="preserve">Man verſuche es einmal, von dem Nordpol-Ende einer
              <lb/>
            Nadel ein Stückchen abzubrechen, und man wird ſehen, daß
              <lb/>
            das Stückchen auch ein vollſtändiger Magnet iſt, der am Bruch
              <lb/>
            einen Südpol hat. </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s5032" xml:space="preserve">Ja, man kann eine Magnetnadel in tauſend
              <lb/>
            kleine Stücke zerbrechen und jedes Stückchen wird ein voll-
              <lb/>
            ſtändiger Magnet ſein, und zwar: </s>
            <s xml:id="echoid-s5033" xml:space="preserve">mit Nordpol, Südpol und
              <lb/>
            unmagnetiſcher Mitte.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s5035" xml:space="preserve">Man muß ſich alſo denken, daß das Eiſen der Stricknadel
              <lb/>
            nur aus einzelnen Atomen beſteht, und muß ſich zur Erklärung
              <lb/>
            der magnetiſchen Erſcheinungen vorſtellen,
              <emph style="sp">daß</emph>
            in
              <emph style="sp">jedem
                <lb/>
              Atom für ſich eine Trennung des Magnetismus vor
                <lb/>
              ſich geht</emph>
            , ſo daß aus jedem Atom ein kleiner Magnet mit
              <lb/>
            Nord- und mit Südpol entſteht.</s>

            <s xml:id="echoid-s5037" xml:space="preserve">So ſonderbar dieſe Vorſtellung auch ſcheinen mag, ſo
              <lb/>
            außerordentliche Wichtigkeit erlangt ſie doch, wenn man bedenkt,
              <lb/>
            daß ſie ausreicht, alle Rätſel der magnetiſchen Erſcheinungen,
              <lb/>
            die wir angeführt haben, zu löſen. </s>

            iſt, wollen wir ſogleich zeigen.</s>
