Poſtea ſubdit: Cylindrus aeris exterioris à quo (vt non­
nulli volunt) mercurij extantis ſegmentum ſuſtinetur, ne­
que plus, neque minus poteſt ſustinere, igitur ſi ferrum can­
dens admoueatur ſegmento vacuo fiſtulæ, nulla eſt ratio cur
ſuperficies ſuprema mercurij ſubſidat.

verò nix, vel trita glacies admoueatur, mercurius attolli­
tur.

Igneæ exhalationes corporeæ vehementisſima agitatione tum
per ſe, cum variè impellendo, & torquendo particulas
aeris in ſummitate fistulæ Torricellianæ reli­
ctas, facilè poſſunt ſubſidentem mercu­
rium æquilibratum deprimere.
REſpondeo, quòd igneæ particulæ nedùm ſe ip­
ſas vehementèr agitant, commouentque, ſed
præterea aereas quoque particulas in vitri ſummita­
te incluſas, vt dictum eſt, vehementiſſimè impellunt;
porrò quia quodlibet corpus æquilibratum poteſt à
quacumque exigua vi agitari, (vt demonſtrauimus
in noſtro opere de vi percuſſionis) ſitque prædictus
mercurius in fiſtula æquilibratus cum æquiponderan­
te
cylindro aereo externo, igitur neceſſariò ab inte­
ſtina illa agitatione ignearum, & aerearum particu­
larum ſuperficies mercurij percuſſa propelli poteſt,
& ideò deprimi infra conſuetam eius altitudinem de­
bet, è contrà adhibita niue, vel trita glacie, ſpatium
illud dum igne priuatur, & deficit quoque agitatio,
& reuolutio nedum particularum ignis, ſed etiam̨
