Viète demonstrated this proposition geometrically and showed that it can be represented by the quartic A4-B2A2=D4 (in modern notation), where A is the hypotenuse, B the base, and D the mean. As in the earlier pages in this set, Harriot works the other way round, beginning from the equation aaaa-bbaa=dddd and then deriving the corresponding construction. ]
