If you Object, That the Scripture does
11Iſa. 38. 8.
Jona. 4. 8. expreſly ſay, The Sun it ſelf returned ten
degrees. I anſwer, 'Tis a frequent manner
of ſpeech in Scripture, to put the Cauſe for
the Effect; as that in Jonas, where 'tis ſaid,
That the Sun did beat upon the Head of Jonas;
22Jona 4. 8. that is, the Beams of the Sun. So that of
the Pſalmiſt, The Sun ſhall not ſmite thee by
33Pſal. 121.
6. Day; that is, the heat which proceeds from
the Sun's reflection. In the ſame ſenſe may
the phraſe be underſtood in this place; and
the Sun may be ſaid to return back, becauſe
the Light, which is the effect of it, did ſeem
to do ſo; or rather, becauſe theShadow, which
is the effect of that, did change its courſe.

This later Scripture then, will not at all
make to the preſent purpoſe: as for thoſe
of the two former kinds, I have already an-
ſwered, That they are ſpoken in reference
to the appearance of things, and vulgar Opi-
nion. For the further illuſtration of which,
I ſhall endeavour to confirm theſe two parti-
culars.

1. That the Holy Ghoſt, in many other
places of Scripture, does accommodate his
Expreſſions, unto the error of our Conceits;
and does not ſpeak of divers things as they
are in themſelves, but as they appear unto
us. Therefore 'tis not unlikely, that theſe
Phraſes alſo may be liable unto the ſame in-
terpretation.
