ALEXANDRO FARNESIO
CARDINALI AMPLISSIMO
ET OPTIMO.
CVM multæ res in mathematicis
diſciplinis nequaquam ſatis ad-
huc explicatæ ſint, tum perdif-
ficilis, &
perobſcura quæſtio
eſt de centro grauitatis corpo-
rum ſolidorum;
quæ, & ad co-
gnoſcendum pulcherrima eſt,
&
ad multa, quæ à mathematicis proponuntur, præ-
clare intelligenda maximum affert adiumentum.
de
qua neminem ex mathematicis, neque noſtra, neque
patrum noſtrorum memoria ſcriptum reliquiſſe ſci-
mus.
& quamuis in earum monumentis literarum nõ
nulla reperiantur, ex quibus in hanc ſententiam addu
ci poſſumus, vt exiſtimemus hanc rem ab ijſdẽ vber-
rime tractatam eſſe;
tamen neſcio quo fato adhuc
in eiuſmodi librorum ignoratione verſamur.
Archi-
medes quidem mathematicorũ princeps in libello,
cuius inſcriptio eſt, κέντρα βάρων ἐπιπέδων, de centro pla-
norum copioſiſsime, atque acutiſsime conſcripſit:
&
in eo explicando ſummã ingenii, &
ſcientiæ gloriã eſt
cõſecutus.
Sed de cognitione cẽtri grauitatis corporũ
ſolidorũ nulla in eius libris litera inuenitur.

tos abhinc annos Marcellvs iI.
