[Commentary:
This page is part of Harriot's experiments on refractive colours. On this sheet, Harriot considers his third and fourth guesses for the secondary cardinal (made on f. 187, 'E') in the glass prism; his calculations show that the 'good cardinal' should be chosen at a point equidistant between the two. ]
F
In triangulo bde. per 4 cardinalem.
[Translation: In triangle bde, by means of the fourth cardinal. ]
In triangulo bde per 3 cardinalem.
[Translation: In triangle bde, by means of the third cardinal. ]
4tus cardinalis 39° 41′ deficit
3us cardinalis 39° 42′ excedit.
Ergo bonus cardinalis 39° 41′ 30″ υ 6386559.
[Translation: The fourth cardinal 39° 41′ falls short.
The third cardinal 39° 42′ goes too far.
And so the good cardinal is 39° 41′ 30″, the sine of which is 6386559. ]
