Notes: 1607 is the date on the engraved title-page; that at the end of the book is 1602; while the date of the dedication, in which the author speaks of sending the book to press six years before, is December 1601. In this case it is the first of the five books that treats of shipbuilding, rigging and kindred subjects. The whole volume is a fairly small quarto of some 600 pages nearly all printed in italics. Book I goes very thoroughly into the build and rig of galleys, galeasses and ships. Besides many diagrams it gives a broadside view of each of these classes; that of the ship is a reversed copy of one of Brueghel's prints of some 40 years earlier.
